It took me seven minutes to figure out what Mum told me.
“Layne, get up! Indi is here.” I jumped out of bed and raced down the stairs. Whoops! I am was in my pyjamas. Back up I went.
“Finally.” Mum said rolling her eyes.
“Where’s Indi?”
“On the computer.” Mum replied.
“Great!” I said rushing to the study. Indi was waiting for me.
“Layne, I want to tell you a secret.”
“Sure, go ahead.” I replied.
“You can’t tell anyone. Yesterday. I saw this thing in the basement where I am not allowed. Then I started teasing it because the shape was funny. It punched me in the arm and this is what happened...” She lifted her sleeve up and I saw a big black mark. Inside the mark was writing that said ‘I’m going to get you!’
“Oh yuk! Get it away from me!” I said stepping closer to the door. “Just calm down! If you’re Mum sees you panicking she will tell my Mum, so just stay away from her until you’ve calmed down. So, should we go outside and play with the scooter and the skateboard?” Indi asked.
“I want the scooter!” I yelled racing out the door with Indi following close behind.
We both rushed into the garage to find the lights weren’t working. There were no windows in there either. We took a step further in, ‘BAM!’
“That was the door!” Cried Indi. We searched and searched in the dark for the door. “Hey Layne, did you find the smoke machine?” Said Indi, coughing madly. “We are probably not far from the door now, or completely nowhere near the door.” ‘Ding! Ding!’
“Found a bike!”
“So did I!” Cried Indi, ‘Ding!’
“Indi, I felt something brush against me on my right. It was moving.”
“Well Layne, I felt something on my left and it was moving. It could be us touching each other. You put up your left hand, I’ll put up my right and we’ll try and touch each other. I feel a hand! We’re safe!”
“We just need to get out. I know where we are! Gosh, I am so silly. We put our bikes here. So we are close to the door. We can take the scooter and the skateboard.” We walked through the blackness feeling our way, holding hands just in case we split up around the dark garage.
“Layne, I felt something cold and it is taller than me.”
“It’s probably the cupboard that is next to the door.” Layne answered.
“Yes!” We exclaimed.
We both stood in silence looking at the giant piece of cardboard with ‘HAHA’ all over it.
“Let’s just say nothing ever happened and let’s just play. Layne, can I sleep over at your house?” Indi asked.
“Yeah.” I replied. We both headed inside and made some space in my room for a bed.
We walked up the steps after watching a movie.
“That was a great movie wasn’t it Layne.”
“Yeah, I liked when...”
“Shhh!!!”
“Why did you interrupt me?”
“Look!” Indi pointed over to the spare room. I saw a huge black shadow looking around.
“I know what to do! I will get one of mum’s pins, the really long ones that are seriously sharp, and we will dig it into him while he isn’t looking. That will really hurt.” Very slowly we crept closer to the evil shadow. We were just centimetres away from poking him when he turned around. He made a grab for Indi. She ducked, she swerved and she accidently brushed against his tummy. He giggled. He laughed and he got a sore throat. This made him angry. He punched me in the belly ‘Whooossshhh!’ I went flying. ‘Bang!’ I crashed.
“Oooo! My arm, my arm!” I said painfully. “At least it will only be a bruise and not broken.” As the shadow walked off, we got ready for bed and tried to sleep as much as we could.
The next morning I woke up and saw the shadow at the end of my bed with Indi in his hand. He grabbed me. Nobody saw us again...
