WHO DARES WINS
Nobody moved a muscle or spoke. The only sound in the game room was the noise that was coming from the screen of the game that Tom and James were playing. When they finished playing, there was smoke everywhere on the screen and it said GAME OVER.
“Who knows the highest score in this game?” Asked James.
“My friend got thirty points last time I remembered.” Answered a boy.
“That’s really easy.” Lied James.
Tom thinks that James is the best person he ever met. He always tried to be better than him in every way. He always tried to beat James in the game. But, they kept getting a draw. While they were playing, Tom saw a girl playing spider cross. It was the hardest game ever. Tom was distracted and lost the game.
“What’s wrong?” Asked James looking worried. “I bet you really easy 24 to 31. What’s wrong?”
“I saw this girl playing spider cross.” Answered Tom.
“She doesn’t have a chance to win it.” Replied James.
“But she did.” Said Tom.
James was shocked because no one has ever won the spider cross even though you use all of your pocket money; you still never win a game. The girl has black hair with a fringe. She was wearing three quarter jeans and a black t-shirt. Tom tried to read the writing on her t-shirt. It said ’black is the new colour.’ Tom and James went over to her to say hi. When they went to her, she had won another game.
She went outside after the game was over. Tom was about to speak, when James asked “Are you from around here?”
“No I’m not. I just came here with my dad from Florida.” Answered the girl.
“What’s your name? My name is Tom.”
“Cassie. Who is the person next to you?
“James.” He quickly answered the question.
“Do you want to come to my house to play video games” Asked Tom.
“Yeah sure.” Answered Cassie.
At Tom’s house there was nothing but silence. His parents were at work and came back at night. He got use to not having his parents around during school holidays. He also liked having the house all to himself. Cassie was really good at playing video games.
“Do you like playing video games?” Asked James sounding worried because he doesn’t want to get beaten by a girl.
“No, not really. I don’t really like video games. All of them are easy to play because they are just machines,” Answered Cassie. ”But, I like playing a game that you have to fight your fears.”
“Oh, can we play that now?” Both of the boys said it together.
At lunch, both of them were at the fish and chips shop. “You know that game you told us, can we play that now?” Asked Tom.
“Sure,” Answered Cassie. “But, I need to know what you’re scared of.”
“Well, I’m scared of small area. James is scared of heights.” Answered Tom.
“You got to be kidding me; both of them are so easy.” Said Cassie surprised. “Well, I’ll meet you guys at 2 am at the beach.”
It was 2 am and Cassie arrived the same time as them. “Come and follow me.” Whispered Cassie so no one could hear them. They were at a construction place near the beach. “Why are we here? By the way, we are trespassing.” Demanded James.
“No we’re not. This is where my dad works.” Replied Cassie.
The boys didn’t say anything for about a couple of minute and Cassie gave them an envelope. Both of the boys were curious about the envelope and James asked “What’s this for?”
“Oh, you’ll find out when you win the game.” Answered Cassie.
Cassie showed the boys where Tom is going to be. Tom is going to be inside a room that looks like it was meant to be a lift for the building. Then she said “James is going to be near a hole and tied a rope around his waist and I’m going to hold him. Tom, we’re going to push this lift thing inside the hole, so you guys know who gave up.”
They started to push the lift inside the hole. It took them a while because it was so heavy. Tom jumped onto the lift and went inside it. Cassie closed the door a bit tight so then she could still hear his voice. James was ready and Cassie yelled “The time start now!!”
Tom could already feel that the wall was closing in and he was about to scream stop. But, he heard James yelled”Ok, I give up. Can you please put me down now?”
Then Cassie said “Congratulations James, you won the game.”
“What?” Tom screamed.
Then, he heard a loud bang on the roof. “James are you all right?” Tom screamed. There was no answer. He could hear someone was digging. Tom tried to open the door. But it won’t budge. Tom started to sweat. He got all these thoughts in his head. He could feel that he stopped breathing.”James!” he yelled.
“Tom you can open the envelope now.” Replied Cassie suddenly.
Tom opened the envelope and it said ‘the winner dies faster and the loser dies slower.’
